April 2020 Guest Designer: Alex Syberia

Get to know Alex!
Hello everyone! My name is Alexandra but, on the Internet, I’m also known as Alex Syberia. I always loved handmade and crafty things and tried all kinds of hobbies from jewelry making to bookbinding until I’ve discovered and fallen in love with the beautiful world of card-making; because there is so much magic in every card!
I’ve been making cards since 2017. In card making I love using different styles, I love bright and bold colors. I love mixing and matching colors and patterns. I’m addicted to coloring floral images using various mediums. Also, I like drawing flowers and designing digital stamps for coloring.
And I’m so thrilled to be here today as Altenew’s guest designer. I have been a long time fan of their stunning products and always inspired by their innovative designs.
Let's take a look at Alex's projects!
I have FOUR cards to share with you today. I used the Foliage Fiesta Creativity Kit, which I fell in love with because of the gorgeous stamp set and die sets, and the Watercolor Brush Markers – Tropical Fiesta Set. These colors are amazing!
My goal was to use the supplies that are in this Creativity Kit exclusively so that you could see how truly versatile this kit is.
I started to work on my cards by heat embossing images in Antique Gold Embossing Powder. Then I stamped the images in clear embossing ink on hot pressed watercolor paper and on kraft cardstock and heat embossed them with Altenew's Antique Gold Embossing Powder. I then colored them in loosely. For the first card, I used the following colors: Purple Wine, Crimson, Sunkissed, Fresh Lemon and Paper Bag.
For the second card, I used the following colors: Turquoise, Paper Bag, and Fresh Lemon.
Once my coloring was done, I die cut the images with the coordinating dies.
FIRST CARD
To make my first card, I die cut the Mega Hope Die a few times in pink cardstock and once in yellow glitter cardstock. I glued all the pink layers together and adhered them to the glitter layer.
Next, I splattered Purple Wine watercolor on a white card base. I glued three flower die-cuts in the middle of the card, added the HOPE die-cut and a few clear drops and done! Super easy!
SECOND CARD
For the second card, I temporarily glued flower die-cuts on cardstock to make perfect trimming. Once my panel with the die-cuts was trimmed I took the images off.
I then mounted these die-cuts on a kraft card base with foam tape. Next, I glued a heat embossed sentiment label that says “Stay Awesome” and added several gold sequins.
THIRD CARD
I decided to make a simple card and used one of the flower die-cuts I got for the first card.
To make the background, I used the acrylic block stamping technique. Then, I spritzed my acrylic block with water, added Fresh Lemon watercolor and pressed it against a card base. Afterward, I moved the block a bit to ensure a smooth transition of the color. I then added watercolor splatters using the Purple Wine marker.
Next, I adhered the floral die-cut and a heat-embossed sentiment strip that says “To my fabulous friend” with foam tape. To finish, I added a few black crystals.
FINAL CARD
My last card features a watercolor negative painting technique. Negative painting is the act of painting around a subject and allowing the unpainted space to give it its form. It allows you to make vibrant and attractive backgrounds. Combining this technique and stencils you already have opens the door to many new looks! I'll show you how it's easy to do.
First, I took my round brush and apply clean water over the paper. I used just enough water to make the paper shiny. Then I scribbled Desert Night Watercolor Brush Marker onto my plastic paint palette and then added water to dilute the tint to a transparent consistency. I then applied the first color layer.
I allowed this first layer to dry completely before proceeding to the next step. In order to make the process faster and the wait time shorter, I used a heat gun to dry in between layers.
Next, I used the stencil and a pencil to draw leaves. I applied a second layer of paint using the same color as before. This time, I painted around the leaves I just sketched using the stencil.
Like in the first step, I waited for this layer to completely dry before moving on to the next.
The next step was to repeat what I did in the first step. I drew leaves with a pencil using the stencil, then added the next color layer, carefully painting around each new leaf. I used a more saturated blue color (Desert Night) in order to darken the tint. Once my panel was dried, I trimmed it. I then added gold and white paint splatters and mounted the panel onto a card base with foam tape.
Next, I die cut the Mega Hope Die a few times in gold cardstock and once in yellow glitter cardstock. I glued them together with displacement. To make my card look more attractive, I glued a piece of vellum and then glued the die-cut sentiment “Hope” on the card. Finally, I embellished the card using yellow sequins.
